"I originally bought another "same" van in 2011 to transport music gear for our band and to have a place to sleep while car camping. The original van ran but after the restoration began it was found to have extensive hidden rust. By accident I found this second van basically as a rolling shell in near perfect condition in 2012.
The first transporter was thus a suitable donor and the extensive 10-year restoration process began. The restoration is a hobby and has therefore only been able to take place in my free time, a great project but time-consuming (and I no longer play in a band).
After deciding to move to Germany in 2014, the van was transported all the way from Australia with dreams of touring Europe with it.
The vehicle drives and purrs.
An LS1 1997-2004 5.7L V8 GEN3 was installed with a 4L60E automatic transmission. The refurbished ECM is programmed as a Camaro to allow for a better performance-related power curve. New aluminum radiator installed and upgraded to dual electric fans. Switchable Hi-Flow fuel pumps are installed.
All electrics have been updated/upgraded. A 1970's style fiberglass dashboard was installed and all new gauges updated.
Brakes overhauled and improved; with a dual diaphragm brake booster, 13" disc brake conversion at the front for more braking power and drum brakes at the rear overhauled. Bosch vacuum pump and additional vacuum storage cylinders installed due to increased vacuum requirements.
Summer tires mounted on the vehicle are 7" wide R14 at the front, 9.5" wide R14 at the rear, a full set of steel rims for winter tires are also included, 7" front and 8.25" rear. A spare wheel carrier is mounted on the rear step with an additional 7-inch wheel and tire configuration.
Sound and extensive heat damping throughout the vehicle allow for a more comfortable ride in summer and winter.
All rust spots were treated, repaired with sheet metal and welded, not just filled. The roof was completely professionally replaced by the previous owner and repainted a brilliant white to reflect the sun and minimize radiant heat. The remainder of the paint, matte metallic dark gray, wraps the van for a totally unique (Tintable- Raptor Paint) with a matte black hood and black accents on the lower body.
All rear windows polished and dark tinted. Undercarriage completely cleaned and treated and painted with black stone guard.
The original bench seat and separate driver's seat have been restored, the "emergency" center seat has been modified with a hidden coffee cup holder and a small storage compartment.
Rear cameras installed and wiring for front camera and front/rear fog lights also pre-installed.
After a long "discussion" with the wife and many years of restoration, we have come to the conclusion that if we travel where we want, how we want and have parts available wherever we travel, a 4x4 Overlander project would be more appropriate than our beloved van instead.
The current "Competition" Pioneer stereo head unit (€1200), underseat subwoofer (€1000) and amplifiers (approx €1000) will be removed, all other high end speakers are left to the new owner - If you want to keep the Stereo etc we can come to some agreement- Availability of this stereo in Europe is not easy to find and extremely expensive.
The dual battery setup would also be removed to be installed in a new project.
You will never find a Bedford Cf (Opel Blitz - in Germany) in such a high quality condition.
Many spare parts are included in the purchase.
